One of the creators of the original snowboard was a man named Sherman Poppen a young surf freak. Sherman was only dreaming about surfing the magic winter landscape of the Rockies. In 1964 he built a surfboard for the snow. His first prototype was an about 1,20 m long plastic plank: made of two kids' skis bolted together.
A year later, in 1965 Sherman's idea was
put into mass production with a bowling-ball manufacturer to make the product called "snurfer" (=snow-surfer). This product sold pretty well when Christmas time came for the price of 15$. One million snurfers were sold in the following ten years. Soon Mr.Poppen tried to start to establish a competition series but unfortunately the interest for snurfer ended just as fast as it began. The toy leaving peoples homes and only leaving the thought of it. A uncontrollable toy, and the thought of surfing the snowy white mountains seemed dead if it wasn't for people like Dimitrije Milovich or Jake Burton Carpenter. In a interview a journalist ask Sherman if he was surprised by how big it is now. He responded "I tell you when it really hit me. They had three premiere showings of
these snowboarding movies this fall at a local bar and I sat there
dumbfounded. The things they went off and the courses they were running
and I just couldn't believe it. It's really fun to watch."
